The Syrian Civil War is a conflict between the Assad family, who have been in power since 1971, and groups that want to see the back of them. Many regime leaders in the Middle East are extremists, but the Assad family are Alawites which is a branch of Islam that’s pretty soft edged. So the war differs from other conflicts in the region in that respect. It’s not a people pushing against a hard-line Islamic despot. The grudge between Assad and the dissenters is based around failed promises of economic and political reforms.
