Why American Football Is Better Than Soccer

5. Quarterback Is The Only Skilled Position

Someone actually said this to me…”In the NFL you can never get the equivalent of John Terry defending a corner at one end, and then sprinting down the other end and scoring a match winning header at the other’. This is completely unfounded. A defensive touchdown, in which the defending team dispossess an attacking team through either a fumble or interception and get it back to the other teams end-zone, is an even greater spectacle. It is akin to John terry dispossessing Suarez, taking on the whole Liverpool team with a few step-overs, perhaps a Cruyff turn, and sticking it in the back of the net. And yes, defensive touchdowns are common.

It is undeniable that the QB’s role involves infinitely more intelligence and variety than that of the other players, whose roles seem to get a bit repetitive. However, this is a great opportunity for man v man battles, just as we froth at the prospect of Suarez coming up against Ivanovic or Evra, except in American Football they lock horns only with each other, over and over.
