10) Alaotra Grebe

The Alaotra grebe was only ever found in a single remote lake in Madagascar. Scientists are reluctant to write off such a small and rare species as extinct too quickly, but things are not looking good for the little guy. This is the only known photo:

Surveys of the Alaotra lake in 1989, 2004 and 2009 failed to find any evidence of the species at all; the last confirmed sighting of the grebe was in 1982.
