Between 1986 and 2000, 350,400 people were evacuated from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. Belarus was actually the worst hit country, with 60% of the fallout landing there. The amount of radioactive cack that was spewed up is pretty mind-boggling: 400 times more radioactive material belched out from Chernobyl than Hiroshima.

All of the nuclear testing that was carried out in the 50’s and 60’s combined only produced about 1% of the radioactivity of Chernobyl. This was not a glitch, this was a monster.

The human impact was hideous and is ongoing. Cancer rates sky rocketed and many local children were born with mental and/or physical defects.

All of this human suffering stemmed from an invisible cloud of particles emitted from nuclei as a result of nuclear instability. It just doesn’t sound like it should be so bad does it? Apparently the energy released from decaying radioactive material attacks cells directly and mutates DNA. It really is a silent killer, the only fix is to get yourself as far away from it as possible. Fast.

Around 100,000 square kilometres of land were significantly contaminated, black rain fell in Gomel in Belarus and radioactive rain even reached the Scottish Highlands. Pine forests nearest to the plant turned blood red and soon died.
