The boys earned a name for themselves for being reliable and honest and made some reasonable money out of their affliction. Chang and Eng settled on a farm in Traphill, North Carolina. They bought a plantation and slaves, adopted the surname Bunker and became naturalised US citizens. They enjoyed the quiet life of North Carolina, which at that point in time was a pretty backwards place with little but farm land, and that suited them fine.

The story takes a surprising turn here, a nice turn, but definitely a surprising one. Chang and Eng found love in a couple of sisters. Adelaide and Sarah Anne Yates fell for the conjoined chaps and they got married. Here they are with their wives and a couple of their kids.

As you can imagine in such a primitive culture tongues were wagging hard. Many disapproved of the well-to-do sisters shacking up with “freaks”. Their parents would not initially give their blessing, but on learning that the foursome planned to elope, the in-laws reneged and allowed the matrimony to commence.
