The worst effected individual country is the crushingly destitute Central African Republic. The Central African Republic is one of the poorest countries in the world, and in the Human Development Index it comes 179th out of 187. An estimated 95.9% of the population live in slums with little or no hope of ever escaping.

Slum - Riverbank

The largest slum in the world is in Mexico City. Mexico City is a hugely populous city with over 20 million inhabitants, and there’s a lot of cash flowing about, but only at the top of the food chain. At the bottom, minimum wages are $4 per hour, and for many it just makes sense to live on the outskirts and make your own house, rather than try and scrape by in the expensive jam-packed city centres.
