Slums differ in aspect across the globe of course, but there are a few things that they all share: little sanitation, no clean water, no reliable electricity source, no timely policing and each slum has its own local cottage industries and system of self-rule. The population is, in many ways, left to rot by government and officials. Out of sight, out of mind. This is a slum in the Tai Hang region of Hong Kong in the 90’s.

In 2012 around 33% of the population of the developing world resided in slums, that’s 863 million people. The worst effected region is Sub-Saharan Africa where 61.7% of the population is slum bound. Second position is held by South Asia with 35% and third South East Asia at 31%.
