World Cup Referee Accused Of Making ‘White Power’ Gesture During TV Coverage

Australian VAR referee Shaun Evans has been accused of flashing a white power/white supremacy symbol during live TV coverage of the World Cup.

As cameras cut to the VAR control room before Germany v Curaçao, Evans looked directly at the camera, and held an inverted “OK” sign against his thigh for roughly eight seconds while smiling…

Just some playground game where where he’s trying to trick you into looking at a circle below the waist? Or a literal white power sign?

Well, amazingly, a spokesperson for FIFA has addressed the footage and confirmed they are aware of it, indicating that it has launched an urgent investigation to discover Evans’ intent.

Which they definitely would not have bothered doing if some terminally online types hadn’t kicked up a fuss about it on social media.

Furthermore, the anti-discrimination network, Fare, put out this statement: ‘Advice from our experts is that the gesture used clearly resembles an upside down ‘OK’ hand symbol used as a ‘White power’ symbol in global far-right circles.

‘Why is a VAR supervisor is using this symbol at a global football event at the very moment he knows the cameras are on him? It can only be that he is intentionally transmitting a far-right neo-nazi symbol.

‘We note that in the two subsequent games it appears TV directors have stopped introducing the VAR panel to the TV audience.

‘A global television audience should not be subjected to extremist far right individuals using neo-Nazi symbols as they prepare to watch a match. Clearly this official should have no further role to play in this World Cup.’

Now look, maybe this Aussie referee really was flashing a white power sign, but can you imagine if he was just playing the Circle Game with his kids/buddies who were watching back home, and is now getting slandered as a white supremacist by the world’s media? Poor guy probably isn’t online enough to have seen that one coming.

We’ll have to see what FIFA determines following their investigation.
