6) Elephant Hawk-Moth
If you were a tiny little caterpillar and all you wanted to do was eat as much as you could and not get eaten yourself, what would you do? The elephant hawk-moth (Deilephila elpenor) knew exactly what to do, it decided to look as much like a snake as it could.
If you were a bird, you’d probably think “hang on…. is that a snake? It’s only about 3 inches long? I’m not sure it is?” But you would know you’d be better off not risking it and moving on to something that definitely isn’t a snake. Rather than getting your beak bit. Well done caterpillar.
