Truck Transporting 12 Tonnes Of KitKats Has Been Stolen During Heist In Europe

Nestlé says that a truck transporting 12 tonnes of KitKat (413,793 units) has been stolen during transit in Europe.

The company said the stolen truck had left a factory in central Italy and was making its way to Poland when it was hijacked, adding that “the vehicle and its contents remain unaccounted for.”

Nestlé said: “Investigations are ongoing in close collaboration with local authorities and supply chain partners.”

The chocolatier warned that the heist could cause shortages ahead of Easter, although I guess they will be available to buy somewhere because I doubt these crooks are going to eat 12 tonnes of KitKats on their own. Did they even know that this was what they were stealing? Were the trucks carrying anything else, Los Pollos Hermanos style?

Nestlé did not reveal where exactly the truck was stolen, just that it was somewhere between Italy and Poland. So that could mean Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, or maybe Germany, Slovenia and Hungary depending on the route.

In a separate statement, Nestlé said the missing bars are traceable via a unique batch code. Anyone scanning the batch numbers of the stolen chocolate would receive instructions on how to contact them.

They even made light of the situation: “We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with KITKAT – but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate.

“Whilst we appreciate the criminals’ exceptional taste, the fact remains that cargo theft is an escalating issue for businesses of all sizes. With more sophisticated schemes being deployed on a regular basis, we have chosen to go public with our own experience in the hope that it raises awareness of an increasingly common criminal trend.”

I guess the next step will be to raise prices of the KitKats worldwide, not because of Easter, of course, but because a truck carrying 12 tonnes of the stuff was stolen.

Will be interesting to see where these KitKats turn up because I imagine it will be pretty obvious to the buyer(s) now that this story is doing the rounds. I’m off to check the chocolate black market…
