The fifth season of Top Boy has hit a bit of a snag after Kano reportedly walked off set and demanded a storyline be rewritten. Netflix has been forced to ‘temporarily halt production’ on the series as show bosses and Kano hash out their creative differences.

A source told The Sun:

“Production is underway for the fifth series but things aren’t going to plan. Kano was told about a key storyline which involves his character and he absolutely hit the roof, he was fuming.

It all happened last week when he threw his toys out of the pram and stormed off set. He left and said he is refusing to cooperate if the plot stays as it is. He is just completely against what has been written.

It has thrown a spanner in the works for the whole show because it was going to be such a massive part of the series. Now they need to decide whether they try and appease Kano and plough ahead or rewrite this major storyline.”

With Season 4 finishing off so strongly (spoiler = Sully turning up to Jamie’s house and shooting him dead in front of his little brothers), I wonder what they’ve come up with for Season 5 that’s so bad Kano is refusing to turn up to filming until they change it? I know Kano takes his portrayal of Sully very seriously, but how bad could it realistically be? Are they trying to kill him off or what?

Although Top Boy is written by Irish screenwriter Ronan Bennett, Ashley Walters AKA Dushane previously revealed Kano would frequently rewrite dialogue during filming:

“I’ll come in in the morning, into my trailer and someone will knock… ‘Kano would like to see you.’

And then I have to go and have an hour discussion with this guy about a scene that he’s rewritten, that he won’t show me.

So we’ll get into this scene and this guy will just come with a whole monologue, new scene.

But, in his defence, some of those moments have been the most iconic scenes and have made me step up my game.”

I guess we’re gonna have to trust Kano’s judgment on it. The question is – will the showrunners? Netflix insists the show is still scheduled to arrive in 2023. Let’s hope so because the last couple seasons have turned out to be some of the best TV out of the UK in years.

Meanwhile, Kano is also set to star in ‘The Kitchen’ – a dystopian drama set in 2044 London, written by Daniel Kaluuya. Can’t wait for that one.
