Photo finishes happen because the competitors cross the line at the same time and you can’t see who was got across first with the naked eye. This normally happens because they’re going so fast.

It doesn’t normally happen because all the competitors in a race have crashed right at the end and are tumbling over the finish line at the same time, but that’s exactly what happened in the men’s ski cross competition at the Sochi Winter Olympics on Thursday. The four racers come to the final jump and then bang, three of them inexplicably crash and collapse on their skis and end up rolling over the finish line. This would be cool enough but the fact that all three go across the finish line at almost exactly the same time makes it even better.

The Swiss rider Armin Niederer qualified as he managed to stay on his skis and bypass the crash and win the race, and then second place went to the guy in the yellow bib who was a Russian skier called Egor Korotkov. Close.
