Football player Steve Gohouri hadn’t been seen since he left his club TSV Steinbach’s Christmas party to go and spend Christmas with his family in Paris. News soon surfaced that his dead body had been found in a nearby German river.

Gohouri played for Wigan Athletic from 2010 to 2012, and the 34 year old recently joined German side TSV Steinbach. He never made it to his family in France last month and they alerted police. There had been no sign of him whatsoever, until he was found dead in Germany’s River Rhine. Police have said that there was no indication of violence, but as yet are unsure how he ended up in the water.

A statement from TSV Steinbach said:

It is this afternoon certain that Steve Gohouri has died at the age of 34 years. This was confirmed by the Dusseldorf Police to TSV Steinbach.

All managers, players, coaches and assistants at TSV Steinbach are very concerned about the death of Steve Gohouri. Our thoughts in these difficult hours are with his family.

Wigan Athletic tweeted earlier, paying tribute to their former defender.

It’s a sad and tragic incident for Gohouri, his team, friends and family, and football in general. The beautiful game does have its sad moments.
