Everybody loves it when the person singing the song announces themselves at the start of it – with the most famous repeat offenders being Jason Derulo and Pitball – but my mind has actually been blown by the recent revelation that Sean Paul has never actually said ‘Sean De Paul’ at the start of one of his songs.

Yeah, I know that’s what we’ve all been thinking over the years, but the actual story is way more ridiculous than him just putting a ‘De’ in the middle of his name and rolling with it. Speaking to VICE about his iconic track ‘Get Down’, Sean Paul revealed the truth:

There was a famous cricketer in Trinidad, Shivarine Chanderpaul.

Everybody was like ‘Chanderpaul’ and yo, that name stuck. And then I just started to say it at shows and met the dude Chanderpaul years later, and he’s like ‘Yo!’

But yeah, big up to Shivarine Chanderpaul.

Wow. And even funnier that that guy who found the interview actually called it way before anyone else. I’m not into cricket but I guess Chanderpaul is somewhat of a big deal so maybe this isn’t that surprising, but even so it’s kind of mad that Sean Paul himself just didn’t come up with it.

What a Christmas present – drop that one in at your little Christmas drinks event where you haven’t seen anyone all year and you’ll be the talk of the town. You can thank us later.

For more of the same, check out Jake Paul getting weirdly defensive over Jake Gyllenhaal when a BBC called disses him. Weird friendship right there for sure.
