Sam Smith turned up to the BRIT Awards on the weekend looking fully ridiculous in some kind of inflatable Disney villain outfit, and people have been trying to make sense of it ever since.
Well not to worry, because London-based fashion label Harri, founded by London College of Fashion MA Fashion graduate Harikrishnan Keezhathil Surendran Pillai, spoke to Women’s Wear Daily to reveal what Sam Smith’s outfit was supposed to represent:
“Sam was having a lot of hate comments recently after ‘Unholy’ about their body image. This is my take on celebrating his natural form and the beauty of being one’s self.
I wanted to create an image which people have never seen Sam in. I would never sell those rubber trousers but yeah, people love it.”
Woah there! Easy on the misgendering, Harri. It’s ‘their natural form’, not ‘his natural form’. Which actually leaves us none the wiser as an explanation because if there’s one thing Sam Smith doesn’t do it’s ‘celebrate his natural form’. It’s pretty obvious that the only thought behind it was marketing and to get people talking about Sam Smith, so mission accomplished on that front. Just a shame they have to make the lad look so ridiculous and uncomfortable in order to make that happen. What was wrong with shy Sam Smith – the modest boy with the incredible voice? Way more likable back then.
