The report tells of how malnutrition is used as a tool to subdue the masses and punish. Prisoners may be starved deliberately to either break their spirits or end their lives. People are sent to prison camps without trial and with no hope of ever being released. Public executions are common and women and Christians are heavily persecuted.

In response to the report North Korea says it “categorically and totally” rejects the investigators’ findings, which it calls “a product of politicisation of human rights on the part of EU and Japan in alliance with the US hostile policy”. But we didn’t expect them to say “OK, you win, we’ll change immediately”. That was never going to happen.

The North’s regime is entrenched in a culture of disinformation. North Korea is poor, starving, downtrodden and sparse. Their neighbours in the South are rich, advanced and peaceful. If knowledge of the South’s luxury and freedom hit the North’s ear’s there would be trouble. North Korea’s stance is that South Korea is controlled by America and that they are nothing but pawns for the US military, the North’s people must keep believing that lie or all will be lost for those in power.
