The latest horror film everyone is raving about stars Demi Moore as a fading celebrity who decides to use a black market drug to generate a ‘younger, more beautiful, more perfect’ version of herself, and it’s apparently so f**ked up that audiences are walking out of cinemas before the film has even finished.
Here’s the trailer to ‘The Subtance’ starring Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid and Margaret Qualley (who plays the younger version of Demi’s character):
So clearly, this wonder drug has some horrific side effects and apparently some of the scenes this produces are too much for some viewers to stomach.
One viewer wrote on X: “Just came out of ‘the substance’. a truly arresting experience. two people walked out. I was doubled over laughing multiple times. would never recommend it to anyone I love or ever see it again. loved the whole experience and so glad I saw it in cinemas.”
Another echoed: “My review of The Substance is that people walked out of our screening and as far as I’m concerned we don’t have enough movies where that might happen.”
Another shared: “My date wouldn’t let me drive him home after The Substance because ‘we haven’t been seeing each other long enough’ for him to throw up in front of me. He literally just walked home in the rain to vomit with dignity. Five-star movie.”
There’s plenty more Tweets all saying the same sort of thing, and the Rotten Tomatoes rating isn’t too shabby either:
Have to say, it’s also good to see a trailer not giving away every plot point and spoiling the entire movie which is what so many movie trailers seem to do these days. It sets the tone with somewhat Requiem For A Dream vibes, and now all the early reviews are doing the rest.
Feels like I’ve got to check this one out not only because it’s apparently one of the best things Demi Moore has ever been in, but also to find out what’s so horrifically gross and disturbing that it’s causing audiences to walk out halfway through?
The Substance is showing now in cinemas in the US, UK and elsewhere around the world.
