Even with all the wild Madeleine McCann conspiracy theories around, it seems more and more probable as time goes by that the main suspect, German man Christian Brueckner, is  responsible for Maddie McCann’s disappearance and (likely) death.

The 46-year-old is currently serving a seven-year sentence for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz in 2005 – the same village where Madeleine went missing. He hasn’t yet been formally charged over Maddie’s disappearance, but there’s a few reasons why he’s the main culprit:

1. Has a criminal record going back decades, including offences against children.

2. Online interactions with other paedophiles expressing wishes to abduct and kill a little girl.

3. Worked at and had previously burgled the resort that Maddie McCann was abducted from.

4. Changed ownership of his car the day after Maddie was abducted.

5. Resembles several e-fits that have been released.

6. Friends and associates of Brueckner have been ringing the police giving his name as early as 2011.

7. Two friends of Brueckner’s directly told police that he had confessed to Maddie’s murder.

8. A comment made to his ex-girlfriend’s dad that he could hide and transport a child in his camper van he owned at the time.

9. Made a phone call in the vicinity of the resort around the time Madeleine went missing

A public prosecutor leading the investigation has now made public a small part of Brueckner’s online exchanges with another paedophile, which may provide a crucial clue because of the use of the letters ‘mm’.

In the chat, which was too disturbing to be made public in full, Brueckner describes how he wants to ‘document’ his kidnap and murder of a child. One message from Brueckner reads, ‘oh, if the evidence is destroyed,’ to which the other paedophile replies: ‘mm.’

A paedophile responded with the letters 'mm' to Christian Brueckner in a sickening online conversation discovered on his computer by police

He also said he wanted to 'document' his vile crimes (Picture: BBC)

Now, to me, this use of “mm” seems like it’s simply a sign of agreement or acknowledgment to what Brueckner typed, but the investigators seem to believe it could be a reference to Madeleine McCann. I guess it’s something you have to consider when building a criminal case against someone, especially one that’s been dragging for 16 years and so many people have been invested in for so long.

Aside from the sentence he’s serving in Oldenburg, Germany, for the aforementioned rape of a pensioner in 2005, Brueckner is also charged with the rape of an Irish woman in the Algarve a year earlier. He also faces trial in 2024 over two sex attacks against children. So ultimately, it’s good to know this guy will likely spend the rest of his life in prison, even if he never reveals the truth about Madeleine McCann.
