Chemistry Lesson 1

Darwin Awards - chemistry

I was always pretty terrified of Chemistry. Two harmless looking things added together can either do nothing at all, or produce something capable of killing you in an instant. If you ask me it should be banned from schools altogether.

One Bulgarian teacher, Lidia, learned the power of chemistry the deadly way. It’s not 100% clear what had gone on but Lidia and two friends were witnessed swiftly exiting her vehicle at the side of the road and pouring a variety of liquids and powders down a manhole.

No one knows exactly what went down in the car, or down the hole, or why, but diethyl ether and methanol, were in the mix, both of which are highly flammable liquids. And the former is a sedative which might explain the weird behaviour.

The cocktail was so powerful that the ensuing explosion blew the manhole cover clean off and decapitated Lidia en route.
