3. WILLIAM SHATNER – MR TAMBOURINE MAN

William Shatner

Another actor turned singer William “Captain Kirk” Shatner, although singer is very generous with his output consisting of spoken word covers of classics. Quite a lot are bad, many are so bad that they’re good and a few are so bad they can never be considered as good.

I believe this is the case with his cover of the Bob Dylan classic. The crapness of the cover cannot be blamed on the song, as shown by The Byrds’ it can be done by people that aren’t Dylan and still sound as good or even better than the original.

This cover came from Shatner’s debut album The Transformed Man: an album that showcased Shatner’s style of overacting and numerous pauses. Although the album received 4.5 out of 5 stars rating by Allmusic, the destruction of Mr Tambourine Man was used in Golden Throats: The Greatest Celebrity Sing Off, a compilation album highlighting the worst covers by celebrities. I think Golden Throats got it right.
