Arsenal – Why It’s Impossible to Like Them

Jack Wilshere

So now on to the ‘future of English football.’ Don’t make me laugh. How can he be the future of football when he can’t steer clear of injuries? I’d also like to know what he has done to earn this label as ‘the future.’ Was it those goals he scored in the Carling Cup when he was making a name for himself? I don’t think so.

My guess would be that first-leg Champions League tie with Barcelona at the Emirates stadium. It’s amazing the spin that was put on his performance in that game by the national media. Things were being said along the lines of, ‘have you ever seen somebody so young keep both Xavi and Iniesta quiet?’

Allow me to enlighten you on that game. The first 45 minutes, Arsenal and Wilshere were nowhere to be found and were lucky to go in at half time only one goal down. Wilshere’s upturn in form in the second half coincided with Barcelona stepping off the gas. Do you honestly believe that it was Wilshere who stifled the genius of two of the best midfielders ever? It wasn’t. They believed the job was done and relinquished their hold on the game. To all the Wilshere lovers, where was he in the second leg at the Camp Nou, where Arsenal’s only shot on target was an own goal? Surely the ‘future of English football’ should have been creating more goal-scoring opportunities than the ZERO that he did create!

He also revelled in his captain’s mockery of Tim Krul after the injury time winner by engaging in his own mockery of the ‘crying’ keeper on Twitter. My gut feeling is that had he been on the field and at the foot of Mount Krul, he wouldn’t be so quick to tease.

He tweeted this morning about ‘being buzzing in training after last night’s result, #GoonerPower.’ It’s quite interesting to see what his interpretation of ‘Gooner Power’ is. Obviously, to him, it’s beating a team touted for relegation at the start of the season to go into fourth spot in the Premier League while simultaneously have been eliminated from all cup competitions.

My personal favourite Jack Wilshere moment was his gobbing-off at Jermain Pennant in a game against Stoke and then cowering behind the referee when Pennant went to square up to him. Surprised that didn’t get pointed out by the national media but then again, he is ‘the future’ and so naturally has carte blanche to do as he pleases without fear of repercussion or reprisal.
