Musicians are always trying to do all kinds of crazy stunts to get people to notice them – these days it’s just as much about the marketing as it is about the actual music – but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone try and play a show on a train/subway before.

That all changed on Friday night when punk bands False Flag and Surprise Privilege decided to throw a gig on the San Francisco BART train system. The bands boarded the train at one end of the line at 16th St. Mission station at 7pm, then proceeded to set up whilst roughly 100 fans joined the train on its way to the other end of the line Dublin Pleasanton.

Then, on the return journey, both bands played a seven song set each and it was absolute carnage. You can take a look at some of the footage and photos below:

OK so the bands don’t really sound that good and are that kinda crappy noisy/fast and not melodic version of hardcore and it’s not like everyone is moshing their asses off in the train car, but it’s still completely badass that they did this. Like I said at the start, I can’t think of ever seeing a band do anything like that, especially ones that no-one has ever heard of and don’t have a load of money and/or influence behind them.

It kinda sucks that it looks as if the trains were stopped and everyone was thrown off with a couple of people arrested because I don’t really think anyone was doing anything wrong here? I suppose it’s slightly dangerous but come on – it’s probably more dangerous that they’re all there on the platform all at once.

Oh and in case you’re wondering they used a portable battery pack to power their amps and the PA. Must have had a hell of a lot of charge in it. Shout out to the human mic stand too, although they probably could have brought one along too. Bit more punk like that sure though.

For more of the same, check out when Slaves recently changed their name to Soft Play. Is that punk rock?
