4) Major General Michael Carey

US Military Misbehaving - Major General Michael Carey

Major General Michael Carey – this one may be the most worrying of all – an Air Force general in charge of nuclear weapons drank too much at official banquets, insulted his Russian hosts and hung out with two suspicious women he met at a hotel bar during a trip to Moscow in mid-2013. He had been in charge of 450 Minuteman missiles spread across five states and the 9,600 people who operate and maintain them. Here’s some choice excerpts from the official documents:

“Maj Gen Carey was slurring his speech and continually interrupted the tour guide… was lagging behind on the walk to Red Square. Other members had to keep checking on him…. Maj Gen Carey didn’t want to walk around Red Square with the group. Maj Gen Carey was described as pouting and sulking about the day’s events… Maj Gen Carey was drinking alcohol and kept trying to get the band to let him play with them… Maj Gen Carey’s behavior again described as rude by interrupting the speakers and correcting the Russian translator.

Brilliant, a serious military hard man, smashed off his face in Russia, offending people and trying to jam with the band. I’m pleased he no longer has his finger over the button.

Individually, none of these stories are going to rate as the worst thing a human has ever done. They’re all bad in their own right of course, but they’re not rape and murder. I think what makes this worse is that the first three of these stories have come out in unison, at a time when the US military is already under quite a bit of scrutiny.

And I mean, jeez, don’t give a vodka fuelled nutter access to weapons of mass destruction. America are always banging on about other people’s WMDs, when they’re the ones with the most. And none of them sound like they can be trusted. It’s all pretty terrifying when you start thinking about it.
