Trump Wants FIFA Boss Gianni Infantino For UN Secretary-General Following World Cup

It sounds completely insane but it really shouldn’t be at this point – President Trump is lobbying for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Trump believes that Infantino “is respected by everyone around the world, and recognises he has a special ability to bring people together”, reports the New York Post.

The timing lines up with the upcoming vacancy as current UN chief António Guterres prepares to step down at the end of December 2026.

Infantino, 56, is also catching a lot of flak for his rule-bending and the various controversies at this year’s World Cup, so he might actually welcome another gig.

In fairness, managing FIFA’s 211 member associations is probably relevant experience for working at the UN. The issue is that Infantino is corrupt as hell and operates with zero conscience or regard for the rules, which explains why Trump likes him so much.

The good news is that he can’t simply be appointed as UN Secretary-General just because Trump says he should. He would need to win a formal recommendation from the 15-member UN Security Council – where any of the five permanent members can exercise a veto – followed by a majority vote confirmation in the General Assembly.

Not to mention, shifting from FIFA to the UN would mean a serious salary reduction. Infantino currently makes around $6 million annually at FIFA, while the UN Secretary-General position pays approximately $418,000. As if he’s taking that kind of pay cut!

I think we can rest easy that this won’t be happening, but still, it’s just classic Trump to nominate his buddy from the most corrupt organisation ever. Really not shocking at all.
