Trailblazing Barrister Faces Jail For Helping Gangster Track Down Rival Who Attempted To Assassinate Him

An up-and-coming barrister considered one of the brightest young new lawyers in Britain has thrown it all away in the dumbest manner possible.

Samreen Akhtar, 37, from Huddersfield, built a name for herself by speaking out against prejudice suffered by young black and Asian aspiring lawyers.

She’s now completely killed any credibility she had after being found guilty of helping a gangster avenge an assassination attempt on him.

Akhtar is said to have assisted career criminal Tabish Ali after he was shot in West Yorkshire.

She used her professional contacts to identify the rival gang member and then passed on the details to Ali – conspiring with him to track down the gunman.

She was found guilty after a week-long trial at Manchester Crown Court of intentionally encouraging or assisting grievous bodily harm with intent, even though the rival gangster actually died as a result of the hit.

She will be sentenced on September 7 and will of course be banned from practice by the Bar Standards Council. All that studying, all those tuition fees, for nothing!

Akhtar was initially arrested back in 2023 but, amazingly, was allowed to continue representing clients for months after she had been charged with the offence.

Her suspension only came into force earlier this July – three years later – as she continued to work until the beginning of her trial.

A barrister told the Mail: ‘Samreen Akhtar was once thought of as one of the brightest young talents on the circuit but it’s been a spectacular fall from grace.

‘It’s an appalling travesty that she was able to carry on working in courts of law while facing such serious charges linked to organised crime. She should have been suspended as soon as she was arrested.’

The man she helped, Tabish Ali, is himself now serving a life sentence for his part in the execution of Jamal Nedd, a member of the Fartown Boys drug gang.

Nedd was taking his mum to work on December 19, 2020, when he was shot in a revenge attack outside his home. All facilitated thanks to Samreen Akhtar.

Crazy to think that someone can build a reputation as a law-abiding champion of the underclass who’s all about justice, and then decide to do something as heinous as help organise the a murder of her friend’s gang rival. Maybe she was bent all along?

Like her buddy, Samreen Akhtar is also looking at a potential life sentence. We’ll find out for sure on September 7.
