Bit of a mad story breaking with news that Liverpool legend Sadio Mane, 31, has married his 18-year-old girlfriend Aisha Tamba at a ceremony in Dakar, Senegal. Obviously this has prompted shouts of ‘raging nonce’ and other unkind terms on social media, with others arguing that we should remember how norms and customs differ across regions of the world.
I think the main thing everyone wants to know is; how long has 31-year-old Mane been dating his ‘long-term’ 18-year-old girlfriend/now-wife? Well, they’ve been together for two years according to this article. Mane first met the architect’s daughter when she was 16 and was paying her bills and school fees until she graduated.
A video posted on X by @abdullahayofel shows the two love birds smiling and laughing as they sit together on a sofa after their wedding. It’s captioned: ‘A very simple and humble man, congratulations Sadio Mane. May Allah bless your union.’
So while this obviously isn’t quite Adam Johnson or Karim Benzema levels of noncery (well, it’s technically and legally not noncery at all since they are both of age), it does seem a bit creepy to think that maybe this girl was promised to Sadio Mane a long time ago (like, way before she was 16), and that he was paying her school fees as a 30-year-old man in antipication of marrying her she turned 18.
At the end of the day though, they’re both now consenting adults and look very happy with their union, so more power to them. I would be remiss to not share some of the reaction on social media, though:
