Gender reveals are among the most annoying phenomenons of the modern era that perfectly encapsulate how self-obsessed and narcissistic we have become as a society, but at least you could always count on no one dying in the middle of one.

Until the other day at this gender reveal party in San Pedro, Mexico, that is…

Fair play to the cameraman for managing to catch the crash and immediately pan back to the couple for their happy moment, but unfortunately his technique and the moment itself were both overshadowed by the fact that the pilot, 32-year-old Luis Ángel, died in the incident. As you can see in the footage, many of the guests didn’t even realise that the Piper PA-25-235 Pawnee aircraft had begun to spiral out of control.

As per Aviation Safety Network, the ‘left-hand wing failed after an emergency hopper release of (pink dyed) water during a gender reveal party’. Ángel attempted to navigate the plane over a line of palm trees but ultimately continued to plunge into a tailspin, and was later found lying in the wreckage by a volunteer and Red Cross paramedics.

RIP Luis Ángel, and thoughts with his friends and family. Obviously you can’t put the blame squarely on the gender reveal party and its participants, but maybe it’s time we return to the good old days of gender fart reveals. Keep it simple.
