Margaret Thatcher was a polarising figure to say the least, but it’s still pretty shocking to see an OAP vandalise a statue of Britain’s first female PM – in her own hometown of Grantham, Lincolnshire, no less!

The pensioner was caught on CCTV spraying the word ‘b******’ onto the plinth holding a statue of Margaret Thatcher in the early hours of March 5, with police now asking for the woman in the footage to come forward.

The graffiti has since been removed from the statue, which cost £300,000 and was unveiled in May 2022.

As you might expect, its installation was controversial and the statue has already been egged, spat on, splattered in red paint, etc. Some jokers even marked it as a public toilet on Google Maps.

This week marks the 40th anniversary of the miners’ strike, which started in 1984, so that could explain the timing of this pensioner’s graffiti antics. While Margaret Thatcher was PM between 1979 and 1990, she shut down 20 coal mines which cost 20,000 people their jobs.

Obviously we can’t all be going around spraying the world ‘b******’ on statues of people we don’t like. But at the end of the day, I suppose it’s a victimless crime so let’s hope the authorities take it easy on this mystery OAP who probably suffered herself under Thatcher’s reign.

That’s if they can track her down, that is.
