3. Cemetery Gates

Whenever I hit play on this number I double back to check I haven’t put on a Housemartins B-Side. The jaunty baseline lends the song an air of unexpectedly cheery optimism. Optimism that is rapidly crushed with the opening line “Another dreaded sunny day, So I meet you at The Cemetery Gates”

The first verse regales us with a day in the life of Mozzer and chum heading into the local graveyard to read the stones of the dear departed, morbidly wondering where the souls of these rotting corpses are now, with their feelings and emotions just like our graveyard dwelling narrator.

“and then they lived and then they died
seems so unfair
and I want to cry”

If it’s getting you down so much pal, you should stop hanging about in graveyards.
