2. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

Understandably one of the most popular songs The Smith’s ever produced; the closing lines of the opening verse easily resonate with any floppy haired adolescent. It’s like petrol on the flames of the hormonal fire that rages inside every teenager

“Oh, please don’t drop me home,
Because it’s not my home, it’s their Home,
and I’m welcome no more”

We’ve all felt ostracised from our parental dwelling at one time in our lives, and this line evokes powerful memories of social anxiety. It’s like kicking an empty panda pop bottle against a graffiti riddled wall.

Where this song really shines though is the chorus; A declaration of unrequited and utterly depressing love. A love that can only be remedied by a horrific and brutal road traffic accident. You can’t argue with the passion when Morrissey coos “To die by your side, well the pleasure the privilege is mine” I’ve felt that love, in fact I feel it right now, but for me its more a case of IF I am going to die, I’d like to be by your side, rather than it being an aspiration.
