Missing Woman Located After Heavily-Filtered Social Media Pics Hampered 4-Day Search
A search for a missing woman in Mexico was reportedly hampered after police used heavily filtered social media photos for her missing persons alert.
This made it difficult for people to recognise 30-year-old Grecia Guadalupe Orantes Mendoza, who went missing in Chiapas, Mexico, on April 12 2026.
This is who the public were asked to keep an eye out for:
And these were among the photos on the missing person alerts:

Locals and volunteers noted the posters looked nothing like her in real life, making visual identification nearly impossible.
Fortunately, she was found alive several days later on a highway connecting Ocozocoautla with Jiquipilas. Officials haven’t released full details about the circumstances of her disappearance or how she was located, but the important thing is that she’s safe and sound.
It does go to show the kinds of issues that filters and AI can cause in the search for missing persons, though. What, did Grecia Guadalupe Orantes Mendoza really have no photos available that weren’t filtered? I guess there must be a lot of people out there whose pictures are all filtered, with no photographic evidence of what they actually look like.
If you went missing today, would people be able to find you based on the photos on your Facebook or Instagram, or is the filter doing too much work? Something to think about if you’re prone to disappearances and kidnappings.
