A former writer for WWE is suing the company for wrongful termination, claiming she was fired after she voiced objection to “offensively racist and stereotypical jargon” in scripts for scenes on RAW and SmackDown.

Britney Abrahams, who is black, filed the lawsuit this week naming WWE, Vince McMahon and other executives as defendants. She alleges that scripts presented in writers’ rooms contained “offensive” material that perpetuated stereotypes.

If you’re wondering what she’s talking about, she gave some examples. In one instance, WWE senior writer Chris Dunn wrote a scene for Bianca Belair, who is black, in which she was scripted to say, “Uh-uh! Don’t make me take off my earrings and beat your ass!”

Another example in the lawsuit had to do with Apollo Crews being told to use a “stereotypical and exaggerated Nigerian accent.”

In another instance, one writer floated the idea of a black male wrestler dressing in drag. I’m not sure whether that would’ve offended black people, drag queens, transgenders, or all three, but the idea was scrapped after a white writer said it could “perpetuate harmful stereotypes that would offend viewers.”

The suit also alleges another proposed racist storyline that involved Muslim wrestler Mansoor, who was born in Saudi Arabia. The idea was that he would be keeping a secret from fellow Muslim wrestler Aliyah, and that one writer suggested “How about his secret is he’s behind the 9/11 attacks?”, which sounds like he was maybe cracking a joke, but who knows?

Abrahams claims she was fired in 2022 in retaliation for voicing her concerns about offensive storylines and the discriminatory environment fostered by WWE. Officially though, she was fired after taking a commemorative chair home from WrestleMania 38, which she claims other writers did too but were not fired.

Given the characters and storylines that WWE got away with back in the day – Kamala, The Iron Sheik, Papa Shango etc – all the examples shared by Abrahams in this case sound rather tame, but then again it is 2023 and I suppose we’re being extra careful about that stuff. A classic Vince McMahon move would be to settle out of court, so I fully expect that to happen.
