The Mayor of Detroit being the legend that he is has declared that this week (23-30 May) to be ‘Detroit Techno Week’ in light of the Movement music festival being held in the city. I mean seriously, Sadiq Khan is cool and all (damn sight better than Boris anyway) but I can’t imagine him dedicating an entire seven days to decent music and partying.

Movement festival, which has been going since 2000, plays host to over 100,000 people from all around the world who come to Hart Plaza in Downtown Detroit for the three-day event. Over 100 electronic music artists make their way to the festival in the city which is considered to be the birthplace of techno.

This year’s line-up is nothing short of legendary, with the likes of Kraftwerk, Modeselektor and Nina Kraviz, as well as local heroes like Carl Craig, Mike Huckaby and Juan Atkins headlining. Mega.

Movement 2016 starts this Friday so if you haven’t already got your tickets then I’m assuming you’re not going. However, while we might not have the opportunity to actually get to the event itself, that shouldn’t stop you getting in the spirit of it all. After all, Mike Duggan, Mayor of Detroit has actually written a certificate of recognition for ‘Techno Week’ where he said:

I encourage all to come out and celebrate the festivities, as it creates local and international awareness of Detroit’s rising creative culture.

So in the spirit of it all, why not sack off work or whatever you’re doing and get to a club nearby. And if you can’t do that then hell, get your mates round and some decks and put on some Richie Hawtin. Either way, make sure you celebrate ‘Techno Week’ in style because it only comes round once a year after all.

I wonder how Techno Viking will be celebrating?
