The other day we blogged about 40-year-old Dave Wootton from North Yorkshire, who had the police called on him for dressing up as the ‘Manchester Arena Bomber’ for a Halloween house party (he even claimed to have won Best Costume).

While the outfit was completely inappropriate and in bad taste, you wouldn’t really think it was a police matter, would you? Well, that’s where we’d all be wrong, because North Yorkshire Police have confirmed that they arrested Wootton and that he’s being held on ‘several offences’.

Mr Wootton said he won 'best costume' at the party (Picture: David Wootton)

In a statement, the force said: ‘North Yorkshire Police can confirm that a man has been arrested after the force received complaints about a man wearing an offensive costume on social media depicting murderer Salman Abedi, who killed 22 people at Manchester Arena.

‘The man was arrested on November 1 on suspicion of a number of offences including using a public communication network to send offensive messages.

‘He remains in police custody for questioning at this time.’

OK, so in addition to dressing like the Manchester Arena Bomber for Halloween, it sounds like Dave may have posted something on social media that was so offensive it warranted him being arrested and held in police custody. Maybe he was still in character and called for jihad or something?

Before his arrest, Dave had told The Sun: “It’s not offensive. It was an adult fancy dress. I didn’t mean any harm to anyone and I deeply apologise if I have.”

Listen, it’s 2023 and we all know the rules – if you’re going to dress as Jimmy Saville, Osama bin Laden, Adolf Hitler, Bill Cosby or indeed Salman Abedi for Halloween, you better do it in private amongst buddies who will find it as hilarious as you do. We live and we learn.
