Man Ruptures Stomach Drinking Celebrity Chef’s Liquid Nitrogen Cocktail

Note to self – never drink a liquid nitrogen cocktail, or at least ensure the liquid nitrogen has completely evaporated before downing it all in one gulp.

Unfortunately, no one gave this Russian dude named Sergey, 38, the memo:

Liquid nitrogen rapidly turns into gas at room temperature and expands by a factor of 700, so even a small sip of it is basically akin to drinking 10 1.5L of coke in a matter of seconds. Imagine what that would do to your innards and you have some idea of what poor Sergey went through.

The incident happened at the Igra Stolov ‘Game of Tables’ cooking studio in Moscow, where a company was holding a festival bash for its employees which featured a ‘cryo-show’ by the chef.

Upon ingesting the liquid, and given zero warning whatsoever by the chef, Sergey clutched his stomach in agony and then collapsed. He was rushed to intensive care, where surgeons carried out emergency surgery to repair his stomach, which had been torn open.

The good news is that Sergey survived the ordeal, but now faces a long recovery and a dramatically different lifestyle. His nutrient absoprtion will be significantly decreased and there’ll be a vast variety of foods he will no longer be able to eat (anything fatty or starchy or acidic, for example). He may even have to be permanently tube-fed.

All that because he took a gulp of this chef’s stupid cocktail at a work Christmas party. Pretty wild that these drinks are even allowed to be served in this day and age, but since they are, always ensure you handle with care.
