A man in South Africa has died after downing an entire bottle of Jägermeister in under two minutes during a binge drinking competition.

The unnamed 23-year-old was looking to win a R200 (around £10) cash prize at a local liquor store in Mashamba village. The objective was to finish the bottle in under two minutes, which he managed, but he collapsed and died before he could even collect his winnings.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo told local paper Sowetan Live:

“One of them immediately collapsed thereafter and was taken to the local clinic, where he was certified dead.”

As horrific as downing a bottle of Jägermeister sounds, it is pretty shocking to hear that it actually killed a man. I guess it’s a question of tolerance, but then you’d think a guy who enters a drinking competition at the local liquor store would be able to handle copious amounts of booze. Goes to show these drinking games can easily overwhelm your body’s ability to function properly in the moment, which is why it’s probably best to use beer and not hard spirits if you absolutely must make a game of it.

Even if the Jägermeister didn’t kill him, the next morning he’d probably wish it had. That stuff is very hard on your guts and gives the worst hangovers. Haven’t touched that stuff since the first year of uni and probably won’t ever again. RIP unnamed South African man – hopefully his buddies at the liquor store learn something from his death.
