Love Island Contestant Shaughna Phillips Speaks Out As Man Is Cleared Of Sexually Assaulting Her
Former Love Island contestant Shaughna Phillips has spoken out after the man she accused of sexual assault was cleared of all charges.
The unnamed man, who worked as a masseur, had 13 other victims besides herself and faced 31 counts of sexual assault. He was found not guilty on at least 20 counts, while the jury was unable to reach verdicts on the remaining charges.
14 accusers, 31 counts and not guilty? That is pretty mental, to be fair.
Despite the outcome, Shaughna, 32, says she has no regrets speaking out [h/t ShadeBorough]
10 women on the jury too! Incredible. This masseur must have taken one look at that bench and thought he was absolutely finished. I guess the evidence against him just wasn’t strong enough despite 14 women accusing him of the same thing, and so he left court without being found guilty on a single count.
In the end, everyone involved has to accept the outcome. Like Shaughna says though, a “not guilty” verdict does not necessarily mean the assault didn’t happen, just that the prosecution could not meet the incredibly high legal standard of proof required to convict someone “beyond reasonable doubt”.
Either way, it’s sad to think that this result could deter other victims of sexual assault from coming forward. Let’s hope that isn’t the case.
