Birmingham Police Are Now Looking For Three Men Who Assaulted Cody Harper On Broad Street
Birmingham Police have finally worked out that the guy they arrested on Broad Street at 1.30am last Sunday was the victim of an assault just moments earlier – and have confirmed they are looking for the assailants.
The arrest of Cody Harper, 20, has turned into a bit of a scandal after the footage went viral – in which he’s pounced upon by police immediately after being assaulted in front them:
We must demand the immediate release of the bodycam footage from the recent unlawful arrest in Birmingham.

The handling of this incident is a blatant failure of duty, as the arresting officer targeted the white male as the aggressor despite the clear reality of the situation.… pic.twitter.com/sDmwwZJoKf
Unfortunately, believing he was still under attack, Harper took a swing at the female officer, and is now due in court later this month for assaulting a police officer. Of course he wouldn’t have even been in that position if the police had jumped on his attackers instead of him.
West Midlands Police have now issued a statement confirming they are looking for the attackers as part of a separate investigation. It reads:
We are carrying out an investigation to identify people involved in an assault in Birmingham city centre.
At around 1.30am on Sunday 21 June, officers were on Broad Street where they arrested a 20-year-old man who has since been charged with assaulting a police officer.
We are aware of footage on social media showing the incident before the man is arrested. Recognising that an assault has taken place we are now carrying out active enquiries to identify those involved.
Although officers were in the area when this assault took place, they were involved in the arrest of another man at the time.
Anyone who witnessed the assault is asked to get in touch with us.
If you can help with our investigation you can contact us via Live Chat on our website or by calling 101 quoting crime reference number 20/308133/26.
Well, better late than never I suppose. The messed up thing is that Harper is still being charged with assaulting a police officer, no matter what happens with the men who beat him up. Amazingly, the force says it has “no concerns” over how the officers reacted on the day.
We’ll have to see how Cody Harper’s court appearance plays out on the 23rd. In the meantime, let’s hope they can at least track down the lads who assaulted him. It shouldn’t be too difficult, should it?
