As well as both being in the conversation for greatest female MMA fighter of all time, Gina Carano and Ronda Rousey are also the two biggest female crossover stars in MMA history.
Carano landed starring roles in Haywire, Deadpool and the Mandalorian, before Disney canned her for her ‘anti-woke’ views on social media. Meanwhile Ronda Rousey popped up in the Fast & Furious, Expendables, Entourage, and was also very successful during a stint with the WWE.
It would seem like any hope of these two MMA legends meeting in the Octaton were dashed, until Rousey went on Kurt Angle’s podcast this week and said she would be up for a UFC return on one condition; that she fight Gina Carano (who herself hasn’t fought since 2009). Rousey said:
“There’s only one person. There’s only one person I would come back for.
I mean, I’ve said it a million times. It’s not like it’s something new but, for Gina man. Gina Carano, she’s the reason why I got into fighting, she’s the reason why I knew it was a possibility. I will always be forever grateful… and if she ever was like, ‘Ronda, I wanna fight you tomorrow at 205 pounds,’ like whatever the hell she’d want — I’m not saying she’s 205 pounds — if she wanted to come into my backyard and do the Rocky thing or, you know, ding, ding and we just do it in the backyard, I don’t care. I will fight Gina wherever she wants and if she doesn’t want to forever, leave [that there]. It’s a respect thing, not like a, ‘F*ck you. I’m coming to get you.’ It’s just like, hey, if you ever wanna pull that card out, it’s there. I love her. Thank you Gina for everything you’ve done.”
Funnily enough, Gina went on Joe Rogan’s podcast the other night, and suggested she would be up for fighting Ronda too. In fact, she explains in the clip that the fight was set to happen years ago, until she and Dana White fell out because he made the news public before she’d properly committed to it. The whole clip is interesting, but forward to 3:45 if you want to hear her talk about how ready she is now, even at 40 years old:
Carano: “I can’t even still say that I wouldn’t.”
Rogan: “You know that Ronda said you’re the one.”
GC: “I know. And honestly, I feel that she’s the one as well. If I wanted to.”
JR: “Let’s go, ladies! Let’s f*cking go!”
Let’s f*cking go, indeed! Yeah OK this fight would have been perfect 7 or 8 years ago as these ladies will be 40 and 35 respectively if this were to go down anytime soon, but it’s still a fight that would do serious numbers. Two legends of the game coming out of retirement and whipping themselves into shape for one last showdown. Not for attention or money or validation because they’re both already massively successful, but just to decide once and for all who the better fighter is.
No doubt Dana White will be jizzing himself at the thought of making this happen, and the suggestion from both women is that they’re open to it. Let’s see if they can make it happen for 2023.
