You wouldn’t think that being non-binary was something you could try on and off like a pair of shoes, but Demi Lovato has been giving that impression after flip-flopping between gender identities in recent years.

After coming out as non-binary and adopting they/them pronouns in 2021, Lovato announced a year later in 2022 that she was reverting back to she/her after ‘feeling more feminine’. Now, in 2023, she’s given a different reason for reverting back to she/her pronouns, claiming it was because she “got tired” of explaining that she was non-binary. As she told GQ:

‘I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was absolutely exhausting.

I just got tired. But for that very reason I know that it is important to continue spreading the word.’

Well, it’s exhausting for the rest of us too, to be fair. She also had a moan about having to use sex-assigned bathrooms because of the lack of gender-neutral ones:

‘I face this every day. For example, in public toilets. Having to access the women’s bathroom, even though I don’t completely identify with it.’

O…K then. Obviously Lovato and anyone else struggling with their gender identity have the right to live their lives and present themselves the way they see fit, but I don’t get why feeling less or more or equal parts feminine and masculine means she has to change her pronouns? Doesn’t that just reinforce gender stereotypes? There’s always the suspicion with non-binary celebrities that they’re just jumping on the latest trend, and it’s hard not to think so in this case because the only time you hear about Demi Lovato these days is when she’s talking about her gender identity.

When she originally came out as non-binary in May 2021, Lovato had said:

“I’m officially changing my pronouns to they/them.

I feel this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.”

I guess we can expect further pronoun changes from Lovato given her ‘fluidity’ and it’s pretty convenient because any time she wants some headlines – boom, just announce your latest pronouns. Thoughts & prayers with the people who have to speak to or e-mail her on a daily basis.
