Football Fan Who Vanished While Traveling To World Cup Found In Pub ‘Blissfully Unaware Of Search’

An England fan who vanished while traveling to the US for the World Cup has been found safe and well in a Barcelona pub after a massive 10-day international missing persons search.

Michael Hewitt, 65, AKA Little Mick, last spoke with his family in Barcelona on June 21, one day after the diehard Leeds fan jetted out of the UK, according to Leeds Live.

Mick was in Barcelona for a short layover, but ended up losing his phone – which contained all his travel tickets – and was completely oblivious that Interpol, Spanish authorities, and his family were desperately looking for him.

His brother Gary says: “He lost his phone soon after arriving in Barcelona, and didn’t know any of the phone numbers stored on it.

“He didn’t think to go to the Embassy as he still had his passport and money, so didn’t think they’d be interested.

“Instead, he just got on with enjoying Barcelona, watching the England matches in the bars.”

What a guy. Leaves his family stressed and worried for 10 days with zero contact while he gets hammered watching the World Cup in Spain, just remaining completely in his own world, apparently not even trying to make it to the US as originally planned?

His family later noted that Mick’s life revolves entirely around football, which we can definitely believe.

In the end, Mick was only found because an off-duty British police officer on holiday spotted him in a Barcelona pub. Both were wearing Leeds United tops and got chatting.

The officer didn’t realise Mick was a missing person (well, neither did Mick to be fair) until he returned to his hotel room and saw the viral search appeals on social media.

The British Embassy simultaneously narrowed down his location by tracking recent bank card transactions to a his hotel.

As good an ending as can be for such a case really. Still, what an idiot! Apparently this has been a huge deal in the Leeds community with tons of people fearing the worst. It’s great that he’s OK and all, but it’s difficult to not think what a tw@t he is too. Fair enough you’ve lost your phone, but if he was in any way bothered at all, he would have found a way to contact somebody back home and let them know he was alright.

Enjoy the rest of your trip, Mick! What a guy.
