In the U.K., baptised Sikhs are legally allowed to carry ceremonial blades. The minute they whip it out, the legal protection is gone, so that should have been the case here, and then who knows? Maybe Digwa would not have been in a position to go on and murder Henry Nowak for no reason whatsoever.
Social media users are also pointing out that there’s something of a double standard in Sikhs being permitted to carry blades – even if for religious reasons – when women are not allowed to carry pepper spray to protect themselves.
Digwa, described by prosecutors as “weapons-obsessed”, killed Nowak using a massive 21cm (8-inch) blade. He claimed to carry this blade as a “kirpan” under his Sikh faith. However, the court heard he also harboured an obsession with large, non-ceremonial knives.
Plenty of questions raised for both police and government in the aftermath of the incident – most of all the sheer incompetence of police who handcuffed Nowak at the scene as he lay dying.
RIP Henry and thoughts with his friends and family.
