Border Collie With Over 1.5 Million Followers Stolen, Sold To Dog Meat Restaurant, Then Eaten

A famous Border Collie with over 1.5 million followers on Chinese social media was stolen, sold to a dog meat restaurant for $25, and eaten.

The popular eight-year-old dog, named Chutou, was stolen from his family’s property in Henan province whilst his owner, a Chinese travel influencer named Guo, was traveling out of the country.

He left Chutou in the care of his father at home, with surveillance footage later capturing a man and a woman taking the dog away on an electric scooter.

Guo cut his trip short and returned to China to launch a massive search campaign. He eventually tracked down a suspect on May 26 and offered a reward of 10,000 yuan ($1,500 USD) for the dog’s safe return.

Sadly, the suspect, who admitted to capturing the dog, revealed that Chutou had already been sold to a dog dealer a week earlier for a mere 180 yuan ($25 USD).

Guo contacted the dealer only to learn that the pet had been resold, slaughtered, and eaten.

When Guo confronted the restaurant butcher to recover Chutou’s remains or fur, he was told everything had already been thrown in the trash.

The suspect claimed he mistook Chutou for a stray dog because the animal followed him when called. Guo strongly rejected this excuse, noting that Chutou was resting on private property and wearing a clearly visible collar and a GPS tracker (which had run out of battery).

According to reports, the suspect and his family refused to apologise. The man allegedly dismissed Guo’s grief by stating: “The dog is dead, so stop making a fuss. I did not break the law.”

Brutal. Just brutal. Apparently this happens a lot in China, with family dogs going missing and their owners having no choice but to conclude that the animals have been kidnapped and sold to restaurants to be eaten. They really need to sort out their animal cruelty laws over there.

Thoughts with Guo and his dad who must be unimaginably heartbroken over this. Is there a Chinese equivalent of John Wick over there? Get him on the case ASAP.
