Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur Have Both Been Banned From Entering The U.K

The British Home Office has banned left-wing commentators Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker from entering the United Kingdom.

Which is strange because according to some people on the internet, the UK lets all Muslims in, no questions asked?

Both Uygur and Piker had their ETA’s/travel visas revoked right before they were scheduled to fly to London for the SXSW London festival this week. Cenk Uygur was also scheduled to give a speech at the Oxford Union.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood revoked their travel authorisations after the govenment determined that their presence was “not conducive to the public good” and that they posed “a serious risk to the public order”.

Authorities cited concerns that their public commentary and rhetoric surrounding Israel could stir up tensions and incite antisemitism within the UK. UK Jewish groups had previously called on the government to block Piker, citing a record of antisemitic rhetoric.

Here’s how both men reacted to the news as they interacted on X earlier:

Of course, the precedent was already set on the other side of the political spectrum when far-right political activist Eva Vlaardingerbroek was banned from entering the UK just the other month. Polish MEP Dominik Tarczyński and conservative commentators Joey Mannarino & Ada Lluch also had their ETAs revoked by the Home Office in recent times.

The question is – does banning any of the above from doing various panels and interviews and appearances like they’ve done previously really accomplish anything? Or does it actually generate more press coverage for them?

In the age of social media, it may be the latter.
