Andrew Neil Under Fire For Bragging About Getting Waiter Fired Over Low Tip

Andrew Neil is catching some flak from the internet after telling a story about how he got a waiter fired from a restaurant after they complained about a low tip.

The multi-millionaire British broadcaster and journalist didn’t like how a waiter in New York called him out for a “light” tip – and so had him sacked:

Neil, 76, explained: “I was [reprimanded] for leaving only 15%, in cash, by the way…

“The waiter came back in that New York aggressive way. I was taking some people out to dinner. I was the host. I was picking up the bill. And he said quite loudly, ‘Was there something wrong with the meal or the service, Mr Neil?’ And I said, ‘No, no, it’s fine.’

“‘Oh, because it’s just, it’s a bit light,’ he said. Yeah. A bit light. And this was in front of everybody, and it was embarrassing. And I [indecipherable] got out more dollars and gave him a bigger tip.

“However, he was unlucky, because I happened to know the owner of that restaurant, and I called the owner later that night, and he was fired in the morning.”

The comment section under that clip on X is absolutely raging at Andrew Neil, accusing him of getting some poor kid fired because he was made to feel slightly uncomfortable. I mean, to be fair, it’s very poor form by a waiter to call a guest out in front of the entire table, but to have him sacked over it? Maybe a bit harsh.

Aside from that, is 15% really considered a bad tip over in the States? I suppose wages aren’t great for servers over there which is why so many of them rely on tips in the first place. Maybe he could have asked his mate who owns the restaurant to give the guy a little raise instead?

But then, he wouldn’t have been able to flex the fact he got some lowly American waiter sacked on Times Radio. They’ll be quaking in their boots serving Andrew Neil from now on.
