Matt Damon Says Getting ‘Canceled’ Will ‘Follow You To The Grave’

Matt Damon is the latest big name celebrity to speak out against the absurdity of cancel culture – even suggesting that some people who have been ‘cancelled’ in the public eye would have preferred prison.

I’m not too sure about that – but here’s what the Good Will Hunting legend had to say about it on JRE the other night.

“I bet some of those people would [who’ve been canceled] would have preferred to go to jail for 18 months or whatever, and then come out and say, ‘I paid my debt. Like, we’re done. Like, can we be done?’”

The thing about that getting kind of excoriated, publicly like that, it just never ends. And it’s the first thing that… you know, it just will follow you to the grave.”

Rogan echoed the sentiment – describing being ‘canceled’ as “this idea that one thing you said or one thing you did, and now we’re going to exaggerate that to the fullest extent and cast you out of civilization for life”.

Well, I think we can all appreciate the point that people should be allowed to grow and move past their mistakes. As Will Smith (roughly) said once; imagine the dumbest thing you said/did as a teenager, except now it’s online forever and millions of people know about it and will never forgive you for it.

What’s tricky is how the person who is ‘canceled’ is supposed to respond to the cancellation. We’ve seen previously how apologising seems to make everything worse, because the internet just ends up beating you up even further with your own admission of guilt. However if you don’t apologise, they accuse you of not being sorry or realising that you did/said something wrong.

Matt Damon “survived” cancel culture back in 2021 when he admitted that he stopped using the homophobic F-slur “months ago” after his daughter told him off about it. Doesn’t seem to have made too much of a dent in his career – he’s still one of the biggest stars in the game.
