I think that South American football matches have a reputation for being a bit more volatile than their counterparts over here because some of the characters involved are absolute madheads – and this was demonstrated perfectly last night during the Boca Juniors and Racing Club game.
The two teams were meeting in their country’s equivalent of the Charity Shield. Boca won the league and the cup last year and faced Racing who finished in the runners up position in the league. I don’t think anyone could have predicted what was going to happen during the game though.
Boca were denied a stoppage time penalty in the last minute of normal time which led to Boca midfielder Sebastian Villa Cano getting into a fight with Racing forward Johan Carbonero and both were sent off. Another Boca player was sent off in extra time for a dangerous tackle, beforeYoung midfielder Carlos Jonas Alcaraz then scored a winner for Racing in the 118th minute.
He celebrated a bit too much in the Boca fans which sparked a massive brawl and led to six other players being sent off, including Alcaraz himself. Another Boca player was then sent off for another dangerous tackle when the game was restarted.

That was a bit confusing wasn’t it without the commentary being in English. I think the last guy must have been sent off for questioning the referee’s decision or making a disparaging hand gesture or something?
I thought there would be more violence during the celebrations/brawl at the end to be honest as well. It’s a landmark day for sure, but I’m kinda disappointed when I see the actual clips – it really seemed like there was going to be a humongous brawl but quite a lot of the reds seem quite soft. Oh well. Maybe South American football isn’t that violent after all?

For more of the same, check out when a player received a red card for touching another player’s bum. That seems a bit much?
