Recently, Russia seems really determined to convince people that any action they take is because they’re fighting “Nazism”. Bad news then for this young lady detained by Russian authorities last week after sharing footage of herself twerking at a war memorial (classic Nazi behaviour).

Rebecca Ziba, 21, a student from Zambia, faces three years in prison and a fine of up to 3 million rubles (£28,888) after she Instagrammed a clip of herself dancing at the Memorial of Glory in the city of Khanty-Mansiysk.

As per Euronews, Rebecca is being held under Part 4 of Article 354.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation which ‘provides for the responsibility for the rehabilitation of Nazism’. Seriously?

The Russian Investigative Committee made her delete the video and release a new one in which she says the following:

“I want to apologise to everyone for the video that I posted on April 16. I posted without knowledge of what it actually meant and knowing who it’s going to hurt or upset.

I posted a video of me dancing on a monument and I did not mean to be…the video that I posted, I didn’t intend for it to be offensive. I didn’t mean to offend anyone or to be disreseptful to those people that died.

And I because I did not know exactly what it meant and I never thought it would be this big. I’m very very very sorry to everyone. I didn’t know. And if I knew, I was never going to post it. I hope I’m understood and forgiven.”

A few outlets have reached out to the Zambian Embassy in Moscow for more information, but no updates yet. Obviously it’s not a great idea to twerk on a war memorial, especially in Russia. Extra braindead to then share the evidence on Instagram while you’re still in the country. At the end of the day though we’re dealing with a 21-year-old student who doesn’t know any better and must be bricking it right now wondering what the Russians are going to do with her. Still not sure how twerking on a war memorial is considered “Nazism”, but then Putin will use that as justification for anything these days.
