Parents Who Refused To Allow Their Three Kids To Go Outside For 4 Years Over COVID Fears Jailed

A German couple living in Oviedo, Spain, has been jailed after keeping their three children locked inside their home for nearly four years due to extreme paranoia over COVID-19.

Christian Steffen, 53, and Melissa Ann Steffen, 48, were arrested in April 2025 after neighbors reported that their kids – 8-year-old twins and a 10-year-old boy – never went to school or played outside.

It turns out the children had been confined to the house between December 2021 and April 2025 – not stepping outside even once.

Investigators described the home as a “house of horrors,” filled with rubbish, medication, and masks, and noted the children were forced to wear masks and diapers, even when they were well past the age of needing them.

The children had reportedly not left their home or had contact with others – not even through media – during this entire 4-year period. They exhibited symptoms of developmental issues, including bow-legs, hunched backs, poor bladder and bowel control, and fear of the outdoors.

Investigators also found unsettling illustrations by the children on the inside of their cots, showing monsters with jagged teeth.

Officials suggest the parents suffered from extreme COVID Anxiety Syndrome, which is apparently a thing.

Christian & Melissa Steffen were each sentenced to two years and 10 months in prison, having both been found guilty of domestic violence, habitual psychological abuse, child abandonment, and illegal detention. You’d think that would warrant more than a couple years in prison, but I guess not.

Apparently prosecutors were hoping to jail the couple for up to 25 years, but the judge took into account their mental states and ‘COVID Anxiety Syndrome’ they were both suffering from. Although it sounds like they may have been abusive psychos from even before COVID, and that was just an excuse to justify their treatment of the kids.

The judge has forbidden the parents from seeing or communicating with their children until the children reach the age of 18.

In the meantime, the kids remain in a juvenile care facility in the Principality of Asturias, where they are receiving intensive psychological care and physical therapy to correct issues caused by years of confinement, such as skeletal deformities and severe social anxiety.

A local woman/university professor named Silvia [below] is the big hero in all this – having kept extensive records on the family and her observations, eventually handing a ‘forensic detective’s’ diary filled with evidence to police, who began their own investigation into the matter.
