Oldest Everyday Items - Hohle Fels - Venus

This one totally blew my mind, I mean, OK, so it’s not the best statue I’ve ever seen in my life, it’s certainly no Michaelangelo. But if you’d been laying in the ground for more than 35,000 years you’d probably look a bit tatty too.

Thirty-five thousand years old. That’s older than civilisation. Older than farming. It predates dogs, dogs were still wolves. I can’t get my head around it.

The statue pictured is called Venus of Hohle Fels, it’s made of mammoth ivory and was found in Germany. It’s not the only Venus statuette of its kind though, similar depictions of women with ample booties and bosoms are to be found scattered throughout Europe.

35,000 years. My word.
